🤍 Creamy-white, old-fashioned roses with layer upon layer of petals and a delicious fragrance—Sombreuil is everything we love about a romantic climbing rose.

🤍 A Rose with a Mysterious Past
Sombreuil has one of the more fascinating identity stories in rose history. For years, this climbing rose was confused with an antique French Tea rose of the same name, dating to the 1850s.
The climber we grow today was introduced in American commerce as Sombreuil in 1951 and later marketed as ‘Colonial White’ in 1959. Its original breeder and parentage remain unknown, but its spectacular flowers and wonderful fragrance have made it a favorite among collectors of old-fashioned roses.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
We love roses that look as though they belong in a beautiful old English garden.
Sombreuil has that timeless, romantic quality, with densely petaled white flowers that pair beautifully with blush, lavender and soft apricot roses. Train it over a garden arch or along a fence, where its fragrant flowers can be enjoyed up close.
Its repeat flowering makes it especially appealing for gardeners who want the charm of an antique rose with more than one season of blooms.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant your potted Sombreuil rose in fertile, well-drained soil with at least six hours of sunlight for the best flowering. Water deeply while establishing and provide a sturdy trellis, arbor or fence to support its climbing canes.
Train long canes horizontally or in gentle arcs to encourage flowering laterals. Prune lightly in late winter, removing dead or damaged growth while preserving healthy main canes.
