No. To protect your roses and ensure planting success, Grace Rose Farm schedules shipments based on your climate zone and local weather conditions. This means we’re unable to guarantee specific ship dates. However, you’ll receive a notification when your order is preparing to ship, and we always time deliveries so your roses arrive fresh, dormant, and ready to plant the moment the soil is workable in your area.
Each order placed will be shipped with it's own box and shipping label. Multiple orders are not combined.
When your bare root roses arrive, open the box right away and inspect your plants. Before planting, soak the roots in water for at least 2–48 hours to rehydrate them. If you can’t plant immediately, keep the roots damp and store them in a cool, shaded place (never frozen or in direct sun). Once planted, water thoroughly and watch your roses awaken as the weather warms.

How to Receive & Plant Your Bare Root Roses When They Arrive
Yes! If the ground is still frozen or your weather is too cold for planting, you can pot your bare root roses in large containers until it’s safe to move them outdoors. Choose a deep pot with good drainage, fill it with high-quality soilless potting mix (never directly in a garden soil, compost or soil conditioner mix), and plant the rose so the crown sits just below the soil surface. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and place the pots in a cool, bright area.
Bare root roses should be soaked in room-temperature water for a minimum of 2 hours and up to 48 hours before planting. This rehydrates the roots after shipping and helps wake the plant from dormancy. If soaking for longer than 24 hours, change the water daily to keep it fresh. Avoid leaving the roots submerged for multiple days, as too much soaking can deprive them of oxygen.
Yes. Trim your bare root rose canes back to about 6 inches, but do not cut the roots. Pruning to this height encourages strong basal bud breaks, leading to more branches and more blooms. It also helps the rose wake up faster, allowing the energy stored in the roots to focus on fewer canes — resulting in a healthier, fuller, and more floriferous plant.
Bare root roses are covered under our One-Year Grow with Gracie™ Guarantee. Read more about it here:
If your bare root rose hasn’t leafed out, don’t worry — some varieties simply take longer to wake from dormancy. Keep the soil evenly moist and the plant in a sunny, warm location, as warmth is what triggers new growth. You can gently scratch a cane with your fingernail — if it’s green underneath, the rose is still alive and will leaf out soon. If the canes are brown and dry inside, that portion may have died back, but new growth can still emerge from the crown. Patience, warmth, and proper watering usually bring even the slowest roses to life.
Yes — but wait for the right moment. At Grace Rose Farm, we recommend holding off on fertilizing until your rose has produced a full set of new leaves. Our roses arrive with stored energy in the roots, so skipping early feeding ensures the plant focuses on establishing strong roots before top growth. Once leaf-out occurs, use a gentle, organic-based fertilizer and avoid over-feeding.
“Sweating” a bare root rose is a method used to help a dormant rose wake up and begin growing. It’s especially helpful for slower varieties or roses that haven’t leafed out after planting. To sweat a rose, cut back the canes to about 6 inches, mist them with water, and then cover the entire plant with a clear plastic bag to trap humidity. Keep the bag secured around the pot or soil to maintain moisture and warmth. This creates a mini greenhouse that encourages buds to swell and leaves to emerge. Once new growth appears, remove the cover and continue caring for the rose normally.
It’s completely normal for bare root roses to have canes of different sizes. Each rose variety grows differently — some naturally produce thicker, more vigorous canes, while others have slimmer, more delicate growth. These differences don’t affect plant health or performance. In fact, variety in cane size helps the rose balance energy as it establishes, leading to stronger basal breaks and a fuller plant once it begins growing in spring.
