Narrowleaf Milkweed Potted Plant

Asclepias fascicularis

A Monarch Essential for Western Gardens

Bring beauty, movement, and purpose to the garden with Narrowleaf Milkweed. Also known as Mexican Whorled Milkweed, this hardy native perennial is an essential host plant for Monarch butterflies in the Western United States. Female Monarchs lay their eggs on its slender, whorled foliage, providing newly hatched caterpillars with the food they need to grow.

From late spring through summer, Narrowleaf Milkweed produces clusters of fragrant white flowers delicately tinged with lavender. The blooms provide a valuable nectar source for adult Monarchs while attracting butterflies, native bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators.

Growing approximately 2–3 feet tall, Narrowleaf Milkweed develops deep roots that make established plants remarkably drought tolerant. It adapts to a wide variety of soils, including clay, loam, rocky, sandy, and gravelly conditions, and performs especially well in climates with wet winters and dry summers. Plants spread gently through underground rhizomes, gradually creating small patches in the garden.

Easy to grow and naturally unappealing to deer and rabbits, Narrowleaf Milkweed is a wonderful choice for pollinator gardens, wildlife-friendly landscapes, and water-wise plantings.
