About Sensation Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Sensation’
Originator: Dirk Eveleens Maarse | Introduced: 1938 | Type: Bicolor Common Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
💜🤍 Purple petals outlined in white—Sensation looks as though someone took a tiny paintbrush to every single flower.
Sensation is one of the most instantly recognizable lilacs in the world. Deep purple to reddish-purple buds open into single violet-purple flowers, each distinctly edged in creamy pure white.
From across the garden, the large flower clusters appear purple and white. Step closer and you discover the real magic: every individual petal has its own delicate white border.
It's dramatic, unusual and completely deserving of its name.

💜🤍 The Lilac That Became a Sensation
Sensation was introduced in the Netherlands in 1938 by Dutch nurseryman Dirk Eveleens Maarse.
And it wasn't created through an elaborate breeding program.
It appeared as a natural mutation—or sport—of the purple lilac ‘Hugo de Vries.’
Maarse recognized immediately that something extraordinary had happened. Instead of producing solid purple flowers, this branch produced purple florets with a sharply contrasting white edge around each petal.
It became the first bicolor lilac ever selected.
The name Sensation was chosen because that's exactly what this unusual new lilac created when it appeared.
More than 85 years later, it still does.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
This is a collector's lilac that doesn't need an explanation once you see it.
The white picotee edge makes every flower look hand-painted.
We especially love Sensation for gardeners building a lilac collection because it adds something completely different from the solid colors of President Lincoln, Charles Joly, Ludwig Spaeth or Madame Lemoine.
There's also a fun quirk to watch for: Sensation can occasionally produce an all-white flower or even a white-flowering shoot because of the unusual genetic structure responsible for its bicolor flowers.
It's one more reason to walk out and inspect this lilac closely every spring.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Sensation in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil for the strongest flowering. Give it enough room to mature into a substantial multi-stemmed shrub.
Water deeply while your bare-root lilac establishes, then maintain consistent moisture during extended dry periods.
If pruning is necessary, do it immediately after flowering. Sensation blooms on old wood and begins developing the following year's flower buds after its spring display.
And plant this one somewhere you can walk right up to it.
Those extraordinary white-edged petals deserve to be seen up close.
