About Royal Gold Bare Root Climbing Rose
Rosa ‘Royal Gold’
🧬 Breeder: Dr. Dennison Harlow Morey, United States
🌹 Introduced: 1957 by Jackson & Perkins
🌹 Rose Type: Large-Flowered Climbing Rose
👑 Deep golden-yellow blooms, rich fruity fragrance, and classic Hybrid Tea form make Royal Gold a climbing rose worthy of its name.
Royal Gold is a golden oldie in the very best sense.
Introduced in 1957, this classic American climbing rose produces large, beautifully formed flowers in a rich deep golden yellow that holds its color remarkably well.
The buds and flowers have the elegant form of a classic Hybrid Tea, with approximately 30–35 petals creating substantial, beautifully shaped blooms.
And Royal Gold isn't just about color.
Its flowers carry a moderate to strong fruity fragrance, making this a wonderful climber for an arbor, fence, wall, or pergola where you'll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy its perfume.
Growing approximately 8–10 feet tall, Royal Gold is substantial enough to create a dramatic vertical display without reaching the enormous proportions of some climbing roses.

👑 A Golden American Classic
Royal Gold was bred in the United States by Dr. Dennison Harlow Morey and introduced by Jackson & Perkins in 1957.
Its parentage is:
Climbing Goldilocks × Lydia
That breeding resulted in a rose combining the elegant flower form of a Hybrid Tea with the growth needed to create a substantial climbing plant.
Nearly 70 years after its introduction, Royal Gold remains an excellent example of the classic large-flowered American climbers of the mid-20th century.
And unlike some older yellow roses whose flowers quickly wash out as they mature, Royal Gold became known for its lasting deep golden-yellow color.
✂️ A Climber for the Cutting Garden
Here's something we especially love about Royal Gold:
It isn't just beautiful on the arbor.
Royal Gold produces its flowers on cutting-length stems, making it an unusually useful climbing rose for gardeners who love bringing flowers indoors.
Those long stems carry large, beautifully formed golden flowers with enough fragrance to make them especially appealing in arrangements.
Train it vertically for the garden.
Then cut it for the vase.
You get the best of both worlds.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
This is old-school rose glamour in gold.
Royal Gold gives us so many of the characteristics we love about classic roses: beautifully shaped flowers, rich color, noticeable fragrance, long cutting stems, and a little bit of American rose history.
We especially love that deep golden-yellow color.
It's richer than lemon yellow and warmer than pale cream—the kind of saturated gold that creates a real focal point when it's trained over an arbor or against a fence.
And because Royal Gold flowers on both new and old wood, there's flowering potential throughout the framework of an established plant.
Add the fruity fragrance and you've got a climbing rose that's just as appealing up close as it is from across the garden.
Long live Royal Gold.
🌿 Growing & Care Recommendations
Planting Site: Choose a location in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil.
Support: Royal Gold can reach approximately 8–10 feet, so provide a sturdy arbor, pergola, fence, wall, or trellis.
Training: Guide the main canes horizontally or diagonally whenever possible. This encourages flowering laterals to develop along more of the cane and creates a fuller display.
Watering: Water deeply after planting and maintain consistent moisture while your bare-root rose establishes its root system.
Pruning: Avoid heavily pruning a young climbing rose while it develops its main framework. Once established, remove dead or damaged wood and selectively renew older canes as needed.
Cutting: Take advantage of those cutting-length stems. Harvest flowers as the buds begin to open to enjoy Royal Gold's classic form and fruity perfume indoors.
Cool-Weather Bonus: Royal Gold is noted for producing its best flower size and richest color in cooler conditions.
Cold Climate Note: Royal Gold is listed for USDA Zones 6b–9b.
