About President Grévy Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Président Grévy’
Breeder: Victor Lemoine | Introduced: 1886 | Type: French Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🩵 Lavender-blue, beautifully double and deliciously fragrant—President Grévy brings one of the dreamiest colors in the lilac world to the spring garden.
President Grévy is a magnificent heirloom French lilac prized for its enormous clusters of double lavender-blue flowers. Reddish-lavender buds open to reveal cool blue-violet petals with softer, paler edges, giving each flower cluster wonderful depth.
The blooms are large, fragrant and gathered into impressive pyramidal panicles that can reach nearly 10 inches long.
If you're searching for a lilac that reads blue rather than purple, President Grévy deserves a place at the top of the list.

🇫🇷 A Presidential French Lilac
President Grévy was introduced in 1886 by legendary French plant breeder Victor Lemoine of Nancy, France.
Lemoine named the cultivar for François Paul Jules Grévy, who served as President of France from 1879 to 1887.
The lilac quickly earned recognition for its unusual color and impressive double flowers, receiving the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Merit in 1892.
More than 135 years later, President Grévy remains one of the classic blue-flowered French lilacs.
🩵 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
The color. Absolutely the color.
Lilacs give us an extraordinary spectrum of purple, wine, pink and white, but a really beautiful lavender-blue brings something completely different to the garden.
President Grévy's double petals make that color even more interesting. Deep buds open into cool lavender-blue flowers, while the lighter petal edges give the clusters an almost silvery appearance.
For a gorgeous collection, pair it with Madame Lemoine for blue and white or contrast it with the deep wine-purple flowers of Charles Joly or Ludwig Spaeth.
And for anyone who loves blue flowers?
This is one to collect.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant President Grévy in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Good sunlight encourages abundant flowering and helps produce a strong, vigorous shrub.
Give it room to mature. This is a traditional French lilac that can develop into a substantial flowering specimen with age.
If pruning is needed, prune immediately after flowering. President Grévy blooms on old wood, so pruning later in the season can remove the flower buds already developing for the following spring.
