About Phantom Panicle Hydrangea Bare Root Hydrangea Tree
Hydrangea paniculata ‘Phantom’
Origin: Pieter Zwijnenburg, Netherlands | Type: Tree-Form Panicle Hydrangea | Hardiness: USDA Zones 4–8
🤍 Enormous creamy-white flowers, strong upright stems and a graceful flowering canopy—Phantom is a showstopper in tree form.
Phantom produces spectacular, densely packed flower panicles that can reach 15 inches long. The flowers emerge creamy white with subtle lime-green tones, then gradually develop soft blush-pink coloring as summer transitions into fall. Trained into a single-trunk tree, it becomes a beautiful focal point for the garden.

🌳 A Hydrangea with a Grand History
Developed by Dutch plantsman Pieter Zwijnenburg, Phantom was selected for its exceptionally large flower heads and strong stems. It earned the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, recognizing its outstanding garden performance.
Its flowers are among the largest of the panicle hydrangeas, yet its sturdy branches help support their impressive weight. In tree form, those enormous blooms create a beautiful canopy above surrounding garden plants.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
We love a hydrangea that makes a statement without sacrificing elegance.
Phantom's enormous white flowers look spectacular rising above a bed of pink, apricot or lavender roses. Its sturdy stems and abundant blooms also make it a wonderful addition to the cutting garden, especially when the flowers begin developing their antique-pink fall coloring.
We especially love using a Phantom Hydrangea Tree as a garden centerpiece or planting a pair to frame an entrance.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant your bare root hydrangea tree in moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, providing consistent water while establishing. Stake the young trunk if necessary and keep mulch away from the bark.
Phantom blooms on new wood, so prune the flowering canopy in late winter or early spring to maintain its rounded shape. Remove shoots emerging from the trunk or base to preserve the tree form, and retain the established main trunk.
