About Sea Shell Peony Bulbs
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Sea Shell’
Breeder: Hans P. Sass | Introduced: 1937 | Origin: USA | Type: Single Herbaceous Peony | Hardiness: Zones 3–8
🩷 Satiny shell-pink petals, a glowing golden center and stems that know how to stand up—Sea Shell is proof that sometimes the simplest peonies are the most beautiful.
Sea Shell produces large, elegant shell-pink single flowers surrounding a brilliant center of golden-yellow stamens.
The petals have an almost silky quality to them—broad, gently cupped and softly ruffled around the edges. Against the bright golden center, that clear pink practically glows.
And unlike those enormous double peonies that can bow to the ground after a spring rain, Sea Shell carries its lighter flowers beautifully on strong, upright stems.
Graceful in the garden.
Gorgeous in a vase.
And an American Peony Society Gold Medal winner.

🐚 As Pretty as a Pink Seashell
Sometimes a flower gets exactly the right name.
Sea Shell's broad petals open in a clear, luminous pink that really does resemble the soft interior of a seashell.
Then comes the contrast.
Right in the middle is an enormous cluster of bright golden-yellow stamens, turning what could have been a simple pink flower into something extraordinary.
There's no mass of petals hiding the center.
No complicated color pattern.
Just pink and gold.
And it works beautifully.
🏅 A Gold Medal Peony
Sea Shell was introduced in 1937 by renowned American peony breeder Hans P. Sass.
Over the following decades, it developed an impressive reputation both in the garden and on the show bench.
In 1990, the American Peony Society awarded Sea Shell its prestigious Gold Medal, noting that the variety had proven itself for more than 50 years.
Historic evaluations praised its large, lively pink flowers, strong stems and outstanding garden performance.
And those strong stems were specifically noted for holding the flowers upright through the spring wind and rain that can send heavy double peonies straight to the ground.
That's a trait we can appreciate.
🌿 Beautiful Without All the Fuss
One of the things that makes Sea Shell especially useful in the garden is its flower form.
Those single flowers are much lighter than heavily double peonies.
That means less weight on the stems.
Less flopping after rain.
And generally less need for staking or support.
It also gives Sea Shell a completely different feeling in the landscape.
Instead of looking heavy and formal, the flowers seem to float above the foliage.
Plant several together and the effect is almost meadow-like—big pink saucers dancing above a mound of green.
✂️ Don't Overlook Singles for Cutting
We love enormous double peonies in a vase.
But single peonies bring something completely different to an arrangement.
Sea Shell's open golden centers add texture, contrast and movement to bouquets filled with doubles.
Pair it with creamy Duchesse de Nemours.
Add the ruffled blush-and-raspberry flowers of Raspberry Sundae.
Then tuck in a few stems of Sea Shell.
Suddenly the bouquet doesn't just have color.
It has personality.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Every cutting garden needs a few flowers that know when enough is enough.
Sea Shell doesn't need 100 petals to get your attention.
It has one beautiful circle of satiny pink petals.
One enormous golden center.
And really good stems.
That's it.
And somehow, nearly 90 years after it was introduced, it still looks fresh and modern.
We especially love planting single peonies among the big doubles because they give the garden somewhere to breathe.
Sea Shell is simple done spectacularly well.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant peony roots in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. In hotter climates, some light afternoon shade can help extend the life of the flowers.
Position the root so the eyes sit approximately 1–2 inches below the finished soil surface. Avoid planting too deeply, as excessive depth can prevent an otherwise healthy peony from flowering.
Space plants approximately 3 feet apart and water thoroughly after planting. Keep newly planted roots evenly moist while they establish without allowing the soil to remain waterlogged.
Because Sea Shell has a naturally strong habit and lighter single flowers, mature plants generally require little or no staking.
Give it time to establish.
Then stand back and let those pink-and-gold flowers float above the garden.
