About Red Charm Peony Bulbs
Paeonia ‘Red Charm’
Breeder: Lyman Glasscock | Introduced: 1944 | Origin: USA | Type: Herbaceous Hybrid, Bomb-Form Double | Hardiness: Zones 3–8
❤️ Big. Red. Unforgettable. Red Charm is the legendary peony against which other red peonies are measured.
Red Charm produces enormous deep crimson-to-merlot-red flowers with an unmistakable bomb form.
A collar of broad, substantial guard petals surrounds a towering center packed with hundreds of smaller, tightly ruffled red petals.
The effect is almost architectural.
And the flowers can become enormous.
Red Charm isn't delicate or demure.
It's a showstopper.

❤️ The Peony That Helped Redefine Red
Red Charm was introduced in 1944 by American peony breeder Lyman Glasscock.
Glasscock crossed two different peony groups—Paeonia officinalis and Paeonia lactiflora—to create the seedling that would eventually become Red Charm.
Even before its official introduction, the flower was attracting attention.
The seedling earned a place in the Court of Honor at the Chicago Regional Show in 1943.
Then came the accolades.
Red Charm became an American Peony Society Grand Champion in 1951, received the APS Gold Medal in 1956, and returned to take Grand Champion honors again in 1965.
More than 80 years after its introduction, Red Charm remains one of the most recognizable red peonies in cultivation.
💣 What Is a Bomb-Form Peony?
If you've ever wondered what gardeners mean when they call a peony a “bomb,” Red Charm is practically the definition.
Large outer guard petals create a saucer around an enormous, densely packed center of smaller petals.
As the flower opens, that center rises above the guards to create a dramatic dome—or “bomb”—of petals.
And Red Charm takes the form to the extreme.
The flowers can become so large and heavy that even its naturally stout stems may appreciate a little support after rain.
But when a flower is this spectacular?
We'll happily give it a peony ring.
✂️ An Icon of the Cutting Garden
Red Charm has also become an important cut-flower peony.
Its early bloom time helps begin the red peony season, while its enormous flowers mean you don't need many stems to create an impressive arrangement.
One flower can practically be a bouquet.
Cut the buds when they're beginning to soften but before they're fully open, bring them indoors and watch those compact red buds transform into enormous bowls of crimson petals.
For dramatic spring arrangements, Red Charm is hard to beat.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Some varieties become classics. Others become benchmarks.
Red Charm is a benchmark.
When breeders, growers and collectors talk about great red peonies, this is one of the varieties everything else gets compared against.
And we understand why.
The color is extraordinary.
The flower form is unmistakable.
The history is fantastic.
And those flowers are absolutely enormous.
We'd plant Red Charm with Duchesse de Nemours for deep crimson against creamy white, then add Raspberry Sundae for blush, cream and raspberry tones.
Or skip everything else and fill an entire vase with Red Charm.
Sometimes more really is more.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant peony roots in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. In hotter climates, some protection from intense afternoon sun can help preserve flower color.
Position the root so the eyes sit approximately 1–2 inches below the finished soil surface. Peonies planted too deeply may produce plenty of foliage but few or no flowers.
Space plants approximately 3 feet apart and water thoroughly after planting. Keep newly planted roots evenly moist while establishing, but avoid saturated or poorly drained soil.
Although Red Charm develops thick, sturdy stems, its mature flowers can become exceptionally heavy—especially after rain. We recommend installing a peony ring or discreet support early in spring and allowing the foliage to grow naturally through it.
Once established, Red Charm can become a long-lived fixture in the garden.
And every spring, you'll remember exactly why gardeners have been obsessed with it since 1944.
