About Prairie Afire Peony Bulbs
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Prairie Afire’
Breeder: Brand | Introduced: 1932 | Origin: USA | Type: Japanese-Form Herbaceous Peony | Hardiness: Zones 3–8
🔥 Soft pink on the outside and absolutely on fire in the middle—Prairie Afire is one of those peonies you have to see up close to truly appreciate.
Prairie Afire produces striking deep to rosy-pink outer petals surrounding a wildly colorful center of red, deep rose, pink and touches of golden yellow.
The effect really does resemble glowing embers surrounded by softer pink petals.
It's dramatic without being heavy, colorful without feeling gaudy, and completely different from the traditional double peony.

🔥 A Prairie in Bloom Since 1932
Prairie Afire was introduced in 1932 by Brand, one of the important names in early American peony breeding.
And this peony has been turning heads for generations.
Historic descriptions praised its deep pink guard petals surrounding brilliant red petaloids, calling the overall effect exceptionally showy.
The flower is traditionally classified as a Japanese-form peony, although its broad, colorful center can give it the lush appearance of an anemone-form flower.
Whatever you call the form, the combination is unforgettable.
🌸 Look Closely at the Center
This is one of those peonies where the magic is in the details.
The broad outer petals create a beautiful pink frame.
Then the center erupts.
Red. Deep rose. Pink. Golden yellow.
Narrow and broader petaloids twist together into a fiery center that gives every flower remarkable texture and depth.
It's also why Prairie Afire is so useful in arrangements. Pair it with simpler white flowers and suddenly all of those subtle colors become even more noticeable.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
We love a peony that refuses to be just one color.
Prairie Afire has all the romance of a pink peony, but the center brings something completely unexpected.
It's almost as though someone took a soft pink flower and dropped a glowing ember right into the middle.
We'd plant it beside Krinkled White for a beautiful contrast of simple white and fiery pink—or pair it with Do Tell to showcase just how much variation exists among Japanese-form peonies.
And for cutting?
Give Prairie Afire some white peonies, blush roses and a little foliage and let it do the rest.
This is the flower that becomes the focal point of the bouquet.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant peony roots in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. A little afternoon shade can be beneficial in warmer climates and may help preserve flower color.
Position the root so the eyes sit approximately 1–2 inches below the finished soil surface. Peonies planted too deeply may produce healthy foliage but few flowers.
Space plants approximately 3 feet apart and water thoroughly after planting. Keep newly planted roots evenly moist during establishment while avoiding saturated soil.
Don't be discouraged if your new peony takes a little time to settle in. Peonies often spend their first seasons developing the root system that will eventually support decades of flowers.
Plant it once.
Then let it become an heirloom.
