About Felix Supreme Peony Bulbs
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Felix Supreme’
Breeder: N.I.W. Kriek | Introduced: 1955 | Origin: Michigan, USA | Type: Herbaceous Double Peony | Hardiness: Zones 3–8
❤️ Deep ruby red, fully double and bred to be cut—Felix Supreme is the kind of peony that makes you want a cutting garden just so you can fill the house with it.
Felix Supreme produces large, luxurious ruby-red to deep crimson double flowers packed with layer upon layer of petals.
Unlike some dark-red peonies that develop bluish-purple tones as their flowers age, Felix Supreme was specifically selected for its ability to hold its rich, warm red coloring.
The result is dramatic.
Dark green foliage. Tall stems. Enormous ruby-red flowers.
And an armload of them in a vase is even better.

✂️ A Peony Bred for the Cutting Bucket
Felix Supreme was introduced in 1955 by Michigan peony breeder N.I.W. Kriek, but its story began decades earlier.
In the 1920s, Kriek planted a collection of some of the finest cut-flower peonies of the era and began raising seedlings from them.
One seedling—simply called No. 6—stood out.
The flowers were larger and richer in color than the famous red peony Felix Crousse, and the stems were especially well suited for cutting.
A fellow peony grower was so impressed that he suggested a name:
Felix Supreme.
Kriek continued testing the plant for years before releasing it, wanting to be certain he had developed the exceptional red cut-flower peony he believed it to be.
In 1955, Felix Supreme finally made its debut.
❤️ Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
This is our kind of peony.
Felix Supreme wasn't bred simply to look beautiful in the landscape.
It was selected for cutting.
Good stems.
Beautiful buds.
Flowers that open well.
Rich color.
And plenty of blooms.
Kriek even noted something particularly important about its color: unlike some older red peonies that became bluish as they aged, Felix Supreme maintained its warm ruby coloring.
Plant it beside Charlie’s White and suddenly you've got a cutting garden filled with enormous ruby-red and creamy-white peonies.
Or cut Felix Supreme on its own.
Because honestly?
A vase filled with nothing but ruby-red peonies doesn't need much help.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant peony roots in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. In warmer climates, a little afternoon shade can help protect flowers from intense heat.
Position the root so the eyes are only about 1–2 inches below the finished soil surface. Avoid planting too deeply, as this is one of the most common reasons peonies grow foliage but fail to flower.
Space plants approximately 3 feet apart and water thoroughly after planting.
The enormous double flowers can become heavy, particularly after rain, so mature plants may appreciate a peony ring or discreet support.
Give your new peony time to establish. Once settled in, Felix Supreme can return every spring for decades—producing more of those extraordinary ruby-red flowers as the clump matures.
