About Mount Baker Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa × hyacinthiflora ‘Mount Baker’
Breeder: Frank L. Skinner | Introduced: 1961 | Type: Early-Flowering Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 2–7
🤍 Snow-white, intensely fragrant and one of the first lilacs to bloom—Mount Baker brings lilac season to the garden early.
Mount Baker is a spectacular early-flowering lilac covered in pure white, single flowers with wonderful fragrance. Creamy buds open into snowy-white panicles that appear approximately two weeks before many traditional Common Lilacs, making Mount Baker one of the first great lilac displays of spring.
And this isn't a delicate white beauty. Bred in Manitoba, Mount Baker combines its elegant flowers with exceptional cold hardiness and a large, vigorous garden presence.

❄️ A Lilac Bred for the North
Mount Baker was developed by legendary Canadian plant breeder Frank L. Skinner at his nursery in Dropmore, Manitoba, and introduced in 1961.
Skinner spent much of his career developing beautiful ornamental plants capable of surviving the brutally cold winters of the Canadian prairies.
Mount Baker is a perfect example.
It's hardy all the way into USDA Zone 2, yet produces masses of elegant, intensely fragrant white flowers.
The cultivar was named for Mount Baker in Washington State, whose enormous snow-covered peak perfectly captures the look of a mature shrub covered in brilliant white flowers.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Mount Baker starts lilac season before most of the garden even knows it's spring.
That's what makes this one particularly valuable in a lilac collection.
Rather than simply adding another white lilac that blooms alongside Madame Lemoine or Miss Ellen Willmott, Mount Baker helps extend the season from the front end.
Plant it with later-blooming lilacs and you can create weeks of successive color and fragrance.
We also love the contrast between its delicate white flowers and its rugged Canadian pedigree.
It looks refined.
It absolutely isn't fragile.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Mount Baker in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil for the strongest flowering. It tolerates a range of soils once established but does not appreciate consistently wet conditions.
Give this one room. Mount Baker can develop into a substantial shrub approximately 10–12 feet tall and wide.
Its Syringa × hyacinthiflora heritage also gives it good foliage quality and improved resistance to powdery mildew compared with many traditional Common Lilacs.
If pruning is necessary, prune immediately after flowering. Mount Baker flowers on old wood, so later pruning can remove the flower buds already forming for the following spring.
