About Monge Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Monge’
Breeder: Victor Lemoine | Introduced: 1913 | Type: French Lilac | Hardiness: Zone 3
💜 Dark, dramatic and deliciously fragrant—Monge is a century-old French lilac with rich red-purple flowers and an exceptionally long spring show.
Monge produces large single, deep reddish-purple flowers gathered into broad, showy panicles. The coloring has a beautiful silvery quality that gives the blooms extra dimension, especially as sunlight moves across the flower clusters.
And Monge doesn't rush its performance. Its abundant flowers can remain in bloom for three to four weeks, making it an especially valuable lilac for extending the spring display.

🇫🇷 One of Lemoine's Great French Lilacs
Monge was introduced in 1913 by Victor Lemoine and his family's famous nursery in Nancy, France.
By that time, the Lemoine family had transformed lilacs from relatively simple garden shrubs into an extraordinary collection of colors and flower forms.
Monge became one of their standout dark-flowered introductions.
Its flowers are often compared with Ludwig Spaeth, but Monge produces its own distinctive display of large single florets in broad clusters with rich red-purple coloring.
More than a century after its introduction, Monge is still considered an outstanding lilac—and remains a favorite among serious lilac collectors.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Monge gives us that rich, moody purple we love without sacrificing flower power.
The long stems make it wonderful for cutting, the dark flowers create beautiful contrast in the garden, and its extended bloom period means we get to enjoy that classic lilac fragrance a little longer.
For a dramatic heirloom combination, plant Monge with Madame Lemoine.
Deep French purple.
Double French white.
Two Victor Lemoine introductions planted side by side—and more than a century of horticultural history blooming together every spring.
That's our kind of garden.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Monge in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun encourages the heaviest flowering and helps maintain a vigorous, healthy shrub.
Give this heirloom room to mature. Monge develops into a substantial upright shrub that can become a beautiful flowering screen or specimen with age.
If pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering. Like other common lilacs, Monge blooms on old wood and begins forming the following year's flower buds after its spring display.
