About Miss Ellen Willmott Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Miss Ellen Willmott’
Breeder: Victor Lemoine | Introduced: 1903 | Type: French Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🤍 Pure white, beautifully double and wonderfully fragrant—Miss Ellen Willmott is an elegant French lilac named for one of gardening history's most fascinating women.
Miss Ellen Willmott produces magnificent clusters of creamy-green buds that open into pure white, fully double flowers. The individual blossoms are unusually substantial for a white lilac, giving each long, pyramidal flower cluster a lush, almost bridal appearance.

🇫🇷 A French Lilac Named for an Extraordinary English Gardener
Introduced by legendary French breeder Victor Lemoine in 1903, this beautiful white lilac was named for Ellen Ann Willmott, one of the most famous—and colorful—English gardeners of her era.
Willmott was a passionate plantswoman who gardened on an extraordinary scale and became one of the most influential horticultural personalities of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
In 1897, she was also one of the first two women ever awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Victoria Medal of Honour.
Her name became attached to dozens of plants, but more than a century later, this spectacular white lilac remains one of the most beautiful.
🤍 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
If you're building a cutting garden, this is the white lilac we'd want in it.
The double flowers make the panicles look incredibly full, while the pure white coloring works with absolutely everything.
Pair Miss Ellen Willmott with the wine-purple flowers of Ludwig Spaeth or Charles Joly for dramatic contrast, or plant it beside Beauty of Moscow for a dreamy collection of blush, cream and white.
But its greatest appeal may be in a vase.
A handful of these fragrant, double-white stems feels less like a garden clipping and more like a spring bridal bouquet.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Miss Ellen Willmott in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Good sunlight encourages the heaviest flowering and helps keep the foliage healthy.
Allow enough room for it to develop into a substantial, long-lived shrub. Once established, an old French lilac can become a magnificent anchor in the landscape.
If pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering. Lilacs bloom on old wood and begin developing the following year's flower buds after their spring display.
