About Ludwig Spaeth Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Andenken an Ludwig Späth’ — Ludwig Spaeth
Introduced: 1883 | Type: Heirloom Common Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🍷 Deep wine-purple flowers, long elegant clusters, and classic lilac perfume—Ludwig Spaeth has been a garden favorite for more than 140 years.
Ludwig Spaeth is an exceptional heirloom lilac known for its unusually rich reddish-purple to deep wine-purple flowers. Large single florets are carried on long, slender upright panicles that can approach a foot in length, creating a dramatic spring display against heart-shaped green foliage.
The color is especially beautiful because it stays rich as the flowers mature rather than quickly fading to pale lavender. Add its wonderful lilac fragrance, and it's easy to understand why this 19th-century variety is still being planted today.

🇩🇪 A German Heirloom from 1883
Ludwig Spaeth's full German name is ‘Andenken an Ludwig Späth,’ meaning “In Memory of Ludwig Späth.” It was introduced by the famous Späth Nursery in Berlin in 1883 and named in honor of German nurseryman Johann Ludwig Carl Späth, who died that same year.
The cultivar later became known in France as ‘Souvenir de Louis Spaeth’, another name you may still encounter in historic lilac collections.
What made it exceptional then is exactly what makes it special now: deep color.
Its large flowers have enough red in their purple coloring to create a rich wine or burgundy-purple effect, setting Ludwig Spaeth apart from the softer lavender and blue-purple shades found in many classic lilacs.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Ludwig Spaeth is for the gardener who wants their purple lilac a little moodier.
We love its deep wine coloring, especially paired with lighter varieties. Plant it beside Beauty of Moscow for dramatic wine-purple and pearly white, or contrast it with President Lincoln's cool lavender-blue flowers.
And unlike some heirlooms that have survived primarily because of their history, Ludwig Spaeth is still an excellent garden plant.
More than 140 years after its introduction, gardeners are still growing it.
That's the kind of heirloom pedigree we love.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Ludwig Spaeth in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil for the strongest flowering and richest garden performance. Give this vigorous lilac room to mature into a substantial shrub.
It may gradually sucker as it ages, creating a traditional multi-stemmed lilac clump. Allow those shoots to develop for a large flowering screen, or selectively remove them to maintain a more defined specimen.
If pruning is needed, prune immediately after flowering. Like other common lilacs, Ludwig Spaeth blooms on old wood and begins preparing the following year's flowers after its spring display.
