🤍 Blush-pink buds unfurl into pearly white double flowers—Beauty of Moscow is one of the world's great heirloom lilacs.
Beauty of Moscow begins spring wrapped in soft pink-lilac buds, but the magic happens as they open. Layer upon layer of double petals gradually fade to pearly white with just a whisper of blush, creating enormous flower clusters that look almost like tiny roses gathered together.
And the fragrance is everything you hope an old-fashioned lilac will be—rich, sweet and unmistakably lilac.

🇷🇺 A Russian Lilac Masterpiece
Beauty of Moscow was created in 1947 by legendary Russian lilac breeder Leonid Kolesnikov, who devoted much of his life to developing extraordinary new lilacs.
Its original Russian name, ‘Krasavitsa Moskvy,’ translates simply to “Beauty of Moscow.”
Kolesnikov created it by crossing ‘Belle de Nancy’ with ‘I.V. Michurin’, producing a lilac unlike almost anything else. Its large double florets were historically described as having a pearly quality and a form reminiscent of tiny roses.
Nearly 80 years later, it remains internationally admired and grown in lilac collections around the world.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Beauty of Moscow doesn't look quite real when it's in full bloom.
The contrast between those rosy-pink buds and pearly white double flowers makes every cluster look hand-painted. Look closely and each individual flower resembles a miniature rose.
Then add the fragrance.
This is the kind of heirloom plant we love—the beauty alone would make it worth growing, but knowing its history makes it even more special.
And when those enormous flower clusters begin opening in spring?
Cut them. Bring them inside. Fill the house with lilacs.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Beauty of Moscow in full sun for the heaviest flowering. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture but does not tolerate soggy conditions.
Give this lilac room to mature. At approximately 8–12 feet tall, Beauty of Moscow can eventually become a magnificent specimen shrub or fragrant flowering screen.
If pruning is needed, prune immediately after flowering. Lilacs develop the following year's flower buds relatively soon after their spring display, so pruning later in the season can sacrifice next year's flowers.
Removing spent flower clusters after bloom can also keep the plant tidy and direct its energy back into growth.
