About William Baffin Bare Root Rose
Rosa ‘William Baffin’
🧬 Breeder: Dr. Felicitas Svejda, Agriculture Canada
🌹 Introduced: 1983
🌹 Rose Type: Canadian Explorer / Hybrid Kordesii — Large Shrub or Climber
🇨🇦 A nearly indestructible Canadian climber covered in huge clusters of brilliant pink flowers—even after seriously cold winters.
If you garden where winter doesn't play nice, meet William Baffin.
Developed in Canada specifically with cold climates in mind, William Baffin has become one of the best-known roses in the legendary Canadian Explorer Series.
This is a big, vigorous rose with strong, arching canes that can be trained as a climber or allowed to develop into an enormous flowering shrub.
Its semi-double flowers are a vivid deep strawberry to bright pink, accented by golden stamens at their centers. Individual flowers are approximately 2½–3 inches across, but William Baffin's real show comes from the way it presents them:
In enormous clusters containing as many as 30 flowers.
And it doesn't stop after spring.
A spectacular early-season display is followed by additional flowers throughout summer and into fall.

❄️ This Rose Was Made for Winter
Here's where William Baffin becomes remarkable.
It was developed by Dr. Felicitas Svejda at Agriculture Canada's Ottawa Research Station as part of a breeding program devoted to creating roses capable of surviving Canada's severe winters.
William Baffin was tested in Ottawa beginning in 1975 and later at locations throughout Canada.
The results were impressive.
In Ottawa, its established canes could remain on their trellis throughout winter without needing to be taken down and protected.
Trials found it hardy even in colder locations in northern Ontario and western Canada, with results placing its hardiness around Zone 2a.
For gardeners accustomed to climbing roses dying back to the snow line—or disappearing altogether after a brutal winter—that's a pretty extraordinary trait.
🇨🇦 The Explorer Series
William Baffin belongs to Canada's famous Explorer Series, a group of roses developed for exceptional winter hardiness and named after important explorers in Canadian history.
Its namesake, William Baffin, was the 17th-century English navigator and explorer associated with Arctic exploration and the waters now known as Baffin Bay.
It's an especially fitting name.
This rose was bred to explore territory where many other climbing roses simply won't go.
🌸 Thirty Flowers in a Cluster
William Baffin isn't trying to produce one perfect exhibition bloom.
It goes for abundance.
Its individual semi-double pink flowers gather together in enormous sprays that can contain up to 30 blooms.
When an established plant sends those clusters along eight or ten feet of arching canes, the effect can be spectacular.
The open flower form also exposes the golden stamens at the center, giving the blooms a cheerful, almost wild-rose quality despite the enormous scale of the plant.
🧬 Bred for Toughness
William Baffin's breeding incorporates Rosa kordesii, an important source of cold hardiness in modern rose breeding.
Its documented breeding line combines hardy Rosa kordesii-derived genetics with ancestry from Red Dawn and Suzanne.
That heritage helped produce a rose combining several characteristics that don't always appear together:
Extreme winter hardiness.
Repeat flowering.
Vigorous climbing growth.
Black spot resistance.
Powdery mildew resistance.
And masses of pink flowers.
That's a pretty impressive résumé for one rose.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
If you've ever been told it's too cold to grow a climbing rose, William Baffin would like a word.
We love this rose because it opens the door to vertical rose gardening for people living in genuinely cold climates.
This isn't a delicate climber you're constantly trying to convince to survive.
William Baffin was specifically bred for cold-climate performance.
And it doesn't merely survive.
It grows.
It climbs.
It repeats.
And when those enormous clusters of bright pink flowers cover the arching canes, it's hard to believe you're looking at one of the toughest roses in the garden.
For gardeners in northern climates who have dreamed about a rose-covered fence, arbor, or trellis:

🌿 Growing & Care Recommendations
Planting Site: Choose a sunny location for maximum flowering. William Baffin can tolerate some partial shade.
Give It Space: This is a substantial rose. Plan for approximately 8–10 feet of vertical growth and provide a sturdy structure.
Training as a Climber: Tie the long, arching canes to a fence, trellis, arbor, or pergola. Training major canes more horizontally or diagonally can encourage additional flowering laterals.
Growing as a Shrub: No trellis? William Baffin can also be allowed to develop naturally into a very large, arching landscape shrub.
Watering: Water deeply after planting and maintain consistent moisture while the bare-root plant establishes.
Pruning: Don't automatically cut this rose back hard each spring. Once established, preserve its main framework of long canes and primarily remove dead, damaged, weak, or unwanted growth.
Cold-Climate Gardens: This is where William Baffin truly excels. Canadian trials found established plants capable of remaining on their trellises through Ottawa winters rather than requiring the extensive winter protection often associated with climbing roses.
Hedge or Screen: Its size, vigor, dense growth, and flower production also make William Baffin an excellent candidate for an informal flowering screen or large boundary planting.
