About Wedgwood Blue Bare Root Lilac Bush
Syringa vulgaris ‘Wedgwood Blue’
Breeder: Father John Fiala | Introduced: 1981 | Type: Common Lilac | Hardiness: Zones 3–7
🩵 Pink buds opening to porcelain blue—Wedgwood Blue is one of those rare lilacs whose color makes you stop and look twice.
Wedgwood Blue begins its spring show with lilac-pink flower buds, but the surprise comes as they open. The buds transform into soft porcelain-blue to lavender-blue single flowers, creating a beautiful two-tone effect as the panicles develop.
The flowers are carried in graceful, slightly arching clusters that have often been compared to wisteria. Add wonderful lilac fragrance and a more manageable habit than many traditional common lilacs, and this is an easy one to fall in love with.

🩵 An American Lilac with an English Blue
Wedgwood Blue was introduced in 1981 by Father John Fiala, the renowned American lilac breeder who devoted decades of his life to developing and documenting exceptional lilacs.
Fiala created Wedgwood Blue from a cross between ‘Rochester’ and ‘Mrs. August Belmont.’
Its name references the beautiful blue associated with traditional English Wedgwood pottery—and once you see the flowers, the connection makes perfect sense.
Pink buds gradually unfold into cool blue-lavender blossoms, giving the entire shrub a dreamy watercolor quality when both colors are present at once.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
This is one of the prettiest color transitions in our lilac collection.
The contrast between the pink buds and cool blue flowers is beautiful from across the garden, but the graceful flower clusters make Wedgwood Blue especially lovely for cutting.
It's also a wonderful choice for gardeners who love lilacs but don't necessarily have room for a 10- to 15-foot heirloom shrub.
And for a collector's combination?
Plant Wedgwood Blue beside Yankee Doodle.
Soft porcelain blue against deep saturated purple would be absolutely spectacular.
🌿 Growing & Care
Plant Wedgwood Blue in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It performs best in climates with cold winters and appreciates good air circulation around the foliage.
Water deeply while your bare-root lilac establishes. Once mature, it develops into a relatively compact, upright shrub compared with many traditional Syringa vulgaris cultivars.
If pruning is necessary, do it immediately after flowering. Lilacs bloom on old wood and begin forming the following year's flower buds after their spring display.
