About Thérèse Bugnet Bare Root Rose Bush
Rosa ‘Thérèse Bugnet’
🧬 Breeder: Georges Bugnet, Canada
🌹 Bred: Around 1941
🌹 Rose Type: Hybrid Rugosa / Shrub Rose
💕 Big, beautifully fragrant pink blooms on one of the toughest roses you can put in the garden.
Some roses are beautiful.
Thérèse Bugnet is beautiful and remarkably tough.
This beloved Canadian rose produces large, loosely double flowers that open in rich fuchsia to reddish pink, gradually softening to a beautiful lighter pink as they mature.
The flowers can reach approximately 4 inches across, with as many as 40 softly ruffled petals.
And the fragrance?
Wonderful.
Thérèse Bugnet carries a strong, rich Old Rose fragrance with distinctive clove notes—the kind of classic rose perfume that makes you want to bury your nose in every flower.
But underneath all that romance is an exceptionally hardy landscape rose capable of thriving where many traditional garden roses struggle.

🇨🇦 Born for a Canadian Winter
Thérèse Bugnet was bred in Canada by Georges Bugnet, a French-born Canadian writer, horticulturist, and rose breeder who worked to develop roses capable of surviving Canada's challenging winters.
And this rose was named for someone especially close to him:
his daughter, Thérèse.
The result became one of his best-known roses.
Its heritage includes Rosa rugosa and other extremely hardy rose species, helping explain the combination of old-fashioned beauty and impressive cold tolerance.
This isn't simply a rose that survives winter.
Cold hardiness is part of its DNA.
🌺 The Fragrance of an Old Rose
One of the best surprises about Thérèse Bugnet is its fragrance.
Cold-hardy landscape roses aren't always grown primarily for perfume.
This one absolutely can be.
The large pink flowers carry a strong, rich fragrance reminiscent of Old Roses, with noticeable clove character.
That makes Thérèse Bugnet particularly wonderful beside a walkway, gate, garden bench, patio, or entrance where you'll naturally pass close to the flowers.
❄️ Beauty Even After the Flowers Are Gone
Thérèse Bugnet has another trick up her sleeve.
The canes themselves are beautiful.
Once the leaves fall, the stems reveal shades of reddish-purple to red, bringing unexpected color and structure to the winter garden.
That's particularly valuable in colder climates where the rose garden may spend months without flowers.
Spring gives you foliage.
Summer gives you fragrant pink roses.
Fall brings continued flowers.
And winter reveals those beautiful colored canes.
This is truly a four-season shrub rose.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Thérèse Bugnet proves that tough roses can still be incredibly romantic.
We love roses with a story, and this one has everything.
A Canadian breeder trying to create roses tough enough for northern gardens.
A rose named for his daughter.
Big, ruffled pink flowers.
That incredible Old Rose-and-clove fragrance.
And a plant capable of handling winters that would make many traditional roses wave a tiny white flag.
It's also a fantastic choice for gardeners who want a rose to become part of the actual landscape rather than simply occupying a spot in a rose bed.
Let it grow into a large specimen.
Plant several as a fragrant flowering hedge.
Or put it somewhere you'll walk past those wonderfully perfumed flowers.
Beautiful. Fragrant. Seriously hardy.
That's Thérèse Bugnet.
🌿 Growing & Care Recommendations
Planting Site: Thérèse Bugnet performs well in full sun but can also tolerate some partial shade.
Give It Room: This is a substantial shrub rose. Allow enough space for its naturally broad, dense habit to develop.
Watering: Water deeply after planting and consistently while your bare-root rose establishes. Once established, its hardy Rugosa heritage makes it a tough landscape performer.
Pruning: Don't treat Thérèse Bugnet like a Hybrid Tea. Much of its flowering occurs from established wood, so avoid cutting the entire shrub hard to the ground each spring. Instead, remove dead or damaged wood and selectively remove older canes as necessary to rejuvenate the plant.
Hedge Planting: Its dense growth makes Thérèse Bugnet an especially beautiful choice for an informal flowering hedge or screen.
Cold-Climate Gardens: This is where Thérèse Bugnet really shines. With reliable hardiness into very cold climates, it's an exciting option for northern rose gardeners who don't want to sacrifice fragrance or flower form for winter survival.
