About Rachel Peony Bulbs
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Rachel’
Breeder: Terry | Introduced: 1900 | Origin: Iowa, USA | Type: Herbaceous Double Peony | Hardiness: Zones 3–8
❤️ Rich garnet-red flowers, strong stems and more than a century of garden history—Rachel is an American heirloom that was made for the cutting garden.
Rachel produces gorgeous deep rosy-red to garnet-crimson flowers packed with substantial, beautifully formed petals.
The color is particularly lovely—richer than a traditional pink peony but softer and more romantic than a true scarlet red. As the flowers mature, the color gently softens, creating beautiful tonal variation across the plant.
And Rachel isn't stingy with her flowers.
This old-fashioned peony is known for being vigorous, upright and wonderfully free-flowering, making it just as useful in the cutting garden as it is beautiful in the landscape.

🇺🇸 An American Heirloom from 1900
Rachel was introduced by Terry of Iowa in 1900, making this beautiful peony more than 125 years old.
Historic American Peony Society descriptions praised Rachel as a good, reliable and free-blooming red, suitable for both garden display and commercial cutting.
The flowers were described as bright garnet red shaded with deeper tones, carried on a plant with an upright habit and attractive foliage.
Those are remarkably practical qualities.
Beautiful flowers are wonderful.
Beautiful flowers on a plant that actually performs are even better.
✂️ An Old-Fashioned Cutting Peony
Rachel developed a reputation as a useful commercial peony because it combines several traits growers look for:
Strong stems.
Plenty of flowers.
Beautiful red coloring.
And blooms that hold up well after cutting.
The sturdy stems carry the flowers nicely above the foliage, while mature plants can produce an abundance of stems for the cutting bucket.
It's exactly the kind of peony we love—one you don't have to feel guilty about cutting because there's another flower waiting behind it.
❤️ A Different Kind of Red
One of the most interesting things about building a peony collection is discovering just how many versions of "red" actually exist.
Kansas brings that brilliant ruby-to-watermelon red.
Felix Supreme gives us a deeper, luxurious crimson-ruby.
And Rachel lands beautifully in between with its distinctive rosy garnet-red coloring.
The petals can soften as the flower ages, so a mature plant covered in blooms may display several shades of garnet, crimson and deep rose at the same time.
For floral arranging, that variation is gorgeous.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
Rachel feels like the peony equivalent of an heirloom red rose.
Romantic rather than flashy.
Deeply colored without being harsh.
Beautiful in the garden but even better with a pair of clippers in your hand.
We especially love Rachel as part of a succession planting. Its late-midseason to late bloom keeps the cutting garden producing after many earlier peonies have finished.
Plant it with creamy Duchesse de Nemours, blush-and-raspberry Raspberry Sundae and white Krinkled White.
Then add Rachel's garnet-red flowers.
That's a bouquet.
🌿 Planting & Care
Plant peony roots in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. In hotter climates, some light afternoon shade can help flowers retain their color and extend their display.
Position the root so the eyes sit approximately 1–2 inches below the finished soil surface. Avoid planting peonies too deeply, as excessive depth can reduce or prevent flowering.
Space plants approximately 3 feet apart and water thoroughly after planting. Keep newly planted roots evenly moist during establishment without allowing the soil to remain waterlogged.
Rachel develops a naturally sturdy, upright plant and typically carries its flowers well, although support can always be helpful when mature double peonies are hit by heavy rain.
Give your new peony time to establish.
Then let Rachel do what she's been doing in American gardens since 1900—
bloom beautifully.
