About Bloomin' Easy® Kimono Hydrangea
Product Description
Bloomin' Easy® Kimono Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hokomabebos') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its compact mounding habit, glossy serrated deep green leaves that turn yellow in fall, and vivid two-toned lacecap flowers — white center with an edging that shifts from vivid red in alkaline soils to purple in acidic soils — blooming all summer and attracting butterflies, this bigleaf hydrangea brings bold drama and textural interest while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.
Kimono’s unique two-toned lacecap form is unlike any other hydrangea, with a white center surrounded by a vivid colored edge that creates a striking, kimono-like pattern. Its compact size makes it ideal for edging rose beds and planting in containers near rose gardens.
Maintenance Needs
- Watering: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Mulch to maintain moisture. Tolerates clay soils.
- Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained. Bloom edging color shifts with pH: vivid red (alkaline), purple (acidic).
- Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering if needed. Mulch soil to overwinter.
- Fertilizing: Feed in spring with a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs.
- Winter Care: Hardy to Zone 5; mulch soil to overwinter in colder climates.
- Pest & Disease: Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems.
Landscape Uses
Bloomin' Easy® Kimono Hydrangea is a versatile, compact shrub that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.
How to Use Bloomin' Easy® Kimono with Roses
Kimono pairs beautifully with roses by adding bold two-toned color, delicate lacecap texture, and extended seasonal interest. Its vivid red or purple edged lacecap blooms create a striking complement to white, blush, and soft pink rose varieties, while its compact mounding habit creates a lush foreground that softens the base of rose bushes. The yellow fall foliage adds a final seasonal flourish as the garden winds down.
- Use in front of or beside roses for a vivid two-toned lacecap display.
- Plant near white or blush roses to maximize the contrast of the red or purple edging.
- Adjust soil pH to shift bloom edging toward red (alkaline) or purple (acidic) to complement your roses.
- Pair with Itea, Dogwood, or Hosta for a layered companion planting scheme.
- Allow 3 feet of spacing so the compact mounding habit does not crowd adjacent roses.
