About Julia's Rose Potted Rose Bush
Rosa ‘Julia’s Rose’ — Julia’s Rose
🧬 Breeder: Willem E. Tysterman / Wisbech Plant Co. Ltd. (United Kingdom)
🌹 Bred: 1976
🌹 A deliciously unusual russet rose blending cream, caramel, and peach into sophisticated, vintage-inspired blooms.
Julia’s Rose is anything but ordinary. Bred in the United Kingdom in 1976, this distinctive rose is treasured for its remarkably unusual coloring—a nuanced blend of cream, caramel, peach, and russet tones that gives each flower a sophisticated, almost antique appearance.
The 4-inch double blooms contain approximately 20–22 petals and carry a mild fragrance. Rather than settling for a traditional pink, red, or yellow palette, Julia’s Rose offers those elusive muted café tones that rose collectors love. It blooms in repeating flushes throughout the season against handsome dark green foliage.
Compact in stature but big on personality, Julia’s Rose grows approximately 2–3½ feet tall and 1½–3 feet wide, making its extraordinary flowers the star of the show.

📖 The Story Behind Julia's Rose
Julia’s Rose was bred in the United Kingdom in 1976 by Willem E. Tysterman and Wisbech Plant Co. Ltd.
Its parentage is:
Blue Moon × Dr. A.J. Verhage
The rose has accumulated several names during its history. It has been known as Julia and was once “found” under the name Pashley Manor Rose. In 2006, Peter Beales Roses reintroduced it in the United Kingdom under another particularly fitting name: Chocolate Rose.
Its distinctive coloring has occasionally resulted in confusion with another famous brown-toned rose, Café, but Julia’s Rose is its own distinctive variety.
💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It
The color. The color. The color.
Julia’s Rose belongs in that wonderfully unusual category of roses that can be difficult to describe with a single color word. Is it caramel? Cream? Peach? Russet? Café au lait?
The answer is a little bit of everything.
We love roses like this because the flowers can feel different depending on the light and stage of bloom. Against its dark green foliage, those muted, earthy petals have an incredibly sophisticated appearance that feels both vintage and surprisingly modern.
For gardeners who have enough traditional pink and red roses and are ready for something truly different, Julia’s Rose is a collector’s kind of color.
🌿 Growing & Care Recommendations
Garden Placement: Julia’s Rose is suitable for beds, borders, and general garden planting.
Spacing: Allow up to approximately 3 feet for its mature width.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage reblooming.
Pruning: In spring, remove old canes along with dead or diseased wood and any crossing canes.
Warm-Climate Pruning: Remaining canes can be reduced by approximately one-third.
Cold-Climate Pruning: Additional pruning may be necessary where winter damage occurs.
Cold Protection: Julia’s Rose is listed for USDA Zone 7b and warmer and requires protection from spring freezes.
