About Magical® Ruby Snow Hydrangea
Product Description
Magical® Ruby Snow Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata 'Bokomarus') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its compact mounded habit and heavy cone-shaped panicles that arch the branches as they bloom white and mature to ruby pink from midsummer until frost, this panicle hydrangea brings a dramatic color transition and charm while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.
Blooming on new wood, Magical® Ruby Snow never misses a season regardless of winter severity. Its butterfly-attracting blooms and tolerance for salt and urban conditions make it one of the most adaptable companions in the rose garden.
Maintenance Needs
- Watering: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained acidic soil. Mulch to maintain moisture. Tolerates clay soils.
- Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained, preferably acidic. Tolerates clay and salt.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins — blooms on new wood so pruning does not reduce flowering.
- Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
- Winter Care: Hardy to Zone 4; mulch soil to overwinter in colder climates.
- Pest & Disease: Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems.
Landscape Uses
Magical® Ruby Snow Hydrangea is a versatile, compact shrub that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.
How to Use Magical® Ruby Snow with Roses
Magical® Ruby Snow pairs beautifully with roses by adding a dramatic white-to-ruby color transition, texture, and extended seasonal interest. Its arching panicles create a graceful backdrop that complements roses of any color, while its midsummer-to-frost bloom season fills the garden with beauty between and after rose flushes. The ruby pink maturation echoes the warm tones of many beloved rose varieties.
- Use beside or behind roses for a dramatic white-to-ruby panicle display.
- Plant near blush or pink roses to echo the ruby pink maturation color.
- Choose for northern gardens where cold hardiness to Zone 4 is needed.
- Cut panicles for fresh arrangements alongside rose blooms.
- Allow 4.5 feet of spacing so the spreading mounded habit does not crowd adjacent roses.
