About Bloomin' Easy® Starfield™ Hydrangea
Product Description
Bloomin' Easy® Starfield™ Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hortmafarfa') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its dwarf upright rounded habit, serrated deep green leaves, and large mophead panicles of double flowers with pointed petals — bubblegum pink in alkaline soils, blue to mauve in acidic soils — blooming on both new and old wood from late spring into fall, this bigleaf hydrangea brings bold color and charm while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.
Starfield™’s double flowers with pointed petals give it a uniquely star-like appearance that sets it apart from standard mophead hydrangeas. Its dwarf size and long bloom season from late spring to fall make it one of the most compact and long-blooming companions available for rose gardens.
Maintenance Needs
- Watering: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Mulch to maintain moisture. Tolerates clay soils.
- Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained. Bloom color shifts with pH: blue/mauve (acidic), bubblegum pink (alkaline).
- Pruning: Blooms on both old and new wood — prune lightly after flowering if needed. Avoid heavy pruning in fall.
- Fertilizing: Feed in spring with a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs.
- Winter Care: Hardy to Zone 5; mulch soil to overwinter in colder climates.
- Pest & Disease: Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems.
Landscape Uses
Bloomin' Easy® Starfield™ Hydrangea is a versatile, dwarf shrub that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.
How to Use Bloomin' Easy® Starfield™ with Roses
Starfield™ pairs beautifully with roses by adding bold color, unique star-like double blooms, and extended seasonal interest. Its bubblegum pink or blue-to-mauve mophead clusters complement roses of virtually any color, while its dwarf upright habit creates a tidy foreground that softens the base of rose bushes without taking up much space. Its long late-spring-to-fall bloom season keeps the garden vibrant throughout the entire rose season.
- Use in front of or beside roses for a bold double mophead display in pink or blue-mauve.
- Adjust soil pH to shift bloom color toward the hue that best complements your roses.
- Choose for small spaces where a dwarf, compact companion is needed.
- Plant in containers near rose gardens for a moveable companion display.
- Allow 3 feet of spacing so the dwarf upright habit does not crowd adjacent roses.
