About First Editions® Light-O-Day® Hydrangea
Product Description
First Editions® Light-O-Day® Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailday') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its large olive green leaves with striking white margins and large rounded lacecap panicles — near-white outer petals surrounding tiny inner flowers that shift from soft pink in acidic soils to soft blue in alkaline soils — this compact bigleaf hydrangea brings luminous variegated foliage and delicate bloom color while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.
Light-O-Day®’s variegated foliage is a garden asset even when not in bloom, brightening shaded areas and creating a glowing backdrop for rose beds. Its resistance to leaf reversion makes it more reliable than many variegated hydrangeas.
Maintenance Needs
- Watering: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Mulch to maintain moisture. Tolerates clay soils.
- Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained. Inner bloom color shifts with pH: pink (acidic), blue (alkaline).
- Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering if needed. Mulch soil to overwinter.
- Fertilizing: Feed in spring with a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs.
- Winter Care: Hardy to Zone 6; mulch soil to overwinter in colder climates.
- Pest & Disease: Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems. More resistant to leaf reversion than many variegated varieties.
Landscape Uses
First Editions® Light-O-Day® Hydrangea is a versatile, compact shrub that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.
How to Use First Editions® Light-O-Day® with Roses
Light-O-Day® pairs beautifully with roses by adding luminous variegated foliage, delicate lacecap blooms, and a brightening effect in shaded rose garden areas. Its white-margined leaves create a glowing backdrop that makes rose colors pop even before the blooms appear, while its lacecap flowers add a delicate, airy texture that contrasts beautifully with the full, rounded blooms of garden roses.
- Use beside or behind roses for luminous variegated foliage and delicate lacecap blooms.
- Plant in shaded rose garden areas where the white-margined foliage will brighten the space.
- Adjust soil pH to shift inner bloom color toward pink (acidic) or blue (alkaline) to complement your roses.
- Pair with Hibiscus, Itea, or Azalea for a layered companion planting scheme.
- Allow 4 feet of spacing so the compact habit does not crowd adjacent roses.
