About Invincibelle® Spirit II Smooth Hydrangea
Product Description
Invincibelle® Spirit II Smooth Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens 'NCHA2') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its compact reblooming habit, glossy serrated dark green leaves, and sturdy non-flopping stems bearing dense clusters that open deep pink before fading to an attractive green as they mature — coming in waves throughout summer and into fall — this native North American smooth hydrangea brings bold pink color and charm while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.
A self-cleaning variety that requires no deadheading, Invincibelle® Spirit II is one of the most low-effort pink companions available. Its exceptional cold hardiness to Zone 3 and tolerance for clay, wet soils, and urban conditions make it suitable for gardens across the country.
Maintenance Needs
- Watering: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates clay and wet soils. Mulch to maintain moisture.
- Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained. Tolerates clay, wet soils, and urban conditions.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Self-cleaning — no deadheading needed.
- Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
- Winter Care: Exceptionally cold hardy to Zone 3. Mulch soil to overwinter in colder climates.
- Pest & Disease: Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems.
Landscape Uses
Invincibelle® Spirit II Smooth Hydrangea is a versatile, compact native shrub that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.
How to Use Invincibelle® Spirit II with Roses
Invincibelle® Spirit II pairs beautifully with roses by adding bold deep pink color, texture, and extended seasonal interest. Its deep pink blooms that fade to attractive green create a dynamic color display that complements blush, white, and deep red rose varieties, while its compact non-flopping habit keeps it well-behaved beside rose beds. The self-cleaning habit means less maintenance — more time to enjoy the garden.
- Use beside or behind roses for a bold deep pink-to-green color display throughout summer and fall.
- Plant near white or blush roses to maximize the contrast of the deep pink blooms.
- Choose for northern gardens where cold hardiness to Zone 3 is needed.
- Choose for gardens where native plants and pollinator support are priorities.
- Allow 3.5 feet of spacing so the compact habit does not crowd adjacent roses.
