About Magical® Elizabeth Ashley Hydrangea
Product Description
Magical® Elizabeth Ashley Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hokomarore') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its compact mounding habit, glossy serrated deep green leaves, and large mophead clusters that bloom on both new and old wood from late spring through summer, this bigleaf hydrangea brings soft, romantic color while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.
The flower color responds to soil pH — acidic soils produce soft blue flowers, while neutral or alkaline soils produce taffy pink flowers that deepen with age. This color-shifting quality makes Elizabeth Ashley® a uniquely dynamic companion in the rose garden, adapting its palette to complement whatever roses are nearby.
Maintenance Needs
- Watering: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Mulch to maintain moisture. Tolerates clay soils.
- Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained. Bloom color shifts with pH: blue in acidic, pink in neutral/alkaline.
- Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering if needed. Blooms on both old and new wood.
- Fertilizing: Feed in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Use acidifying fertilizer to encourage blue blooms.
- Winter Care: Hardy to Zone 5; mulch soil to overwinter in colder climates.
- Pest & Disease: Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems.
Landscape Uses
Magical® Elizabeth Ashley Hydrangea is a versatile, compact shrub that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.
How to Use Magical® Elizabeth Ashley with Roses
Magical® Elizabeth Ashley pairs beautifully with roses by adding soft, romantic color and extended seasonal interest. Its pH-responsive blooms — soft blue in acidic soils, taffy pink in alkaline — allow you to tune the color palette to complement your roses. Its compact mounding habit creates a lush foreground that softens the base of rose bushes and fills in the garden between flushes.
- Use in front of or beside roses for a soft pink or blue mophead display.
- Adjust soil pH to shift bloom color toward blue (acidic) or pink (alkaline) to complement your roses.
- Choose for shaded or part-sun rose garden areas where other companions may struggle.
- Pair with Itea, Dogwood, or Hosta for a layered companion planting scheme.
- Allow 3 feet of spacing so the compact mounding habit does not crowd adjacent roses.
